Liver dog treats recipe or how to train an Afghan hound

Afghan hounds have a reputation for being impossible to train .... but speaking from personal experience, a patient approach, good sense of humour and an irresistible liver cake in one's treat bag, anyone can convince even one of the most independent and strong willed breeds to fetch slippers, come back when called, go through agility tunnel and even do scent work!

We would like to share our favourite liver cake recipe as tried and tested on our own Afghan Hounds over many years. These handy little liver cakes also make great gifts for your canine friends and are great fundraisers for charity and club stalls.

Liver cake dog treats recipe. How to train an Afghan hounds

Ingredients need for liver cake dog treats:

1kg liver

3-4 large eggs

700g flour (substitute part with wheat, oats or bran flakes if desired)

Optional:

garlic (2-3 cloves or 1 tsp garlic powder) and rosemary

You will need:

2 x mini muffin trays (we use silicon non-stick type)

large mixing bowl

electric blender

Makes about 25 small liver cakes.

1. Put liver, eggs, rosemary and garlic into blender and puree.

2. In a large bowl mix flour into the liver mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the mini muffin trays (1 teas spoon per mini muffin).

4. Bake at 225C for 7 minutes.

5. Allow to cool and take out.

Liver cake will keep in the fridge for up to a week. We like to cook a large batch of liver cakes, then freeze as soon as they are cool. They are quick to defrost when needed and travel well in a cool box or Thermo flask.
